Szimpla Kert, Ruin bar in Jewish Quarter, Budapest, Hungary
Szimpla Kert is a bar inside a former factory building in the Jewish Quarter of Budapest, with rooms spread across several floors. Walls are covered in graffiti, ceilings hang with old lamps, and furniture from different decades fills every corner.
The first bar of this kind opened here in 2002 inside a building damaged during World War II and abandoned afterward. The concept inspired the creation of similar places across the city in the following years.
This place started as the first concept of its kind, turning a decaying building into a meeting point for artists and night owls. On Sunday mornings the space transforms into a farmers market where locals buy regional produce and chat between tables.
The entrance sits on a busy street in the seventh district, and the building is large enough for visitors to move between different rooms. Arriving in the evening offers more space than later at night when groups fill the tables.
In one of the courtyards stands an old car used as a bench and covered in ivy. The toilets are located in a separate part of the building and reached through a corridor with colorful wall paintings.
