DePasquale Plaza
DePasquale Plaza is a paved square in the Federal Hill neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island, that opens around a large cloverleaf fountain. Bakeries, specialty shops and cafes with outdoor tables line the surrounding streets and create a busy gathering spot.
The street was once called Arthur Avenue and was the heart of an Italian immigrant community in Federal Hill over a hundred years ago. The plaza was later created as part of urban renewal to give people in the neighborhood an open space to gather.
The plaza carries the name of Judge Luigi DePasquale, whose family came from Italy and lived here for generations. Today visitors sit around the cloverleaf fountain and watch the activity in the cafes and shops that serve Italian specialties.
The area is easy to explore on foot during the day, with plenty of shops and outdoor seating on nearby streets. In the evening the plaza is often lit and active, especially on weekends when events or performances take place.
The cloverleaf fountain in the center of the plaza was a gift from the local community and was designed to reflect the Italian heritage of the neighborhood. Nearby buildings such as the Cappelli Block from 1909 still stand and show how tightly built and busy these streets once were.
