Swazi Candles, Gift shop in Inkhundla Lobamba Lomdzala, Eswatini
Swazi Candles is a craft enterprise in Lobamba specializing in the production of decorative candles embellished with colored layers. Beyond the candle shop, there are several small craft stores and a market beneath jacaranda trees, plus a tea garden where visitors can eat.
The enterprise started in 1982 as a small project inside a former cowshed and gradually expanded over the following years. Additional workshops and retail areas were added to accommodate growing production and more employed craftspeople.
The candle-making craft carries deep meaning for local artisans who pass down their skills and support their families through this work. The space has become a gathering point where tradition and creativity are visible in everyday work.
Visitors can explore the site on foot and watch craftspeople working on candles without requiring any special background knowledge. Comfortable shoes are recommended since there are several areas spread across the grounds and the paths may be uneven.
The candles are made using a special technique where colored wax pieces are layered so that lighting them creates a glass-like effect. This method emerged from adapting Mediterranean techniques but was locally refined and today serves as a signature of the place.
