Tskhratskaro pass

Tskhratskaro Pass is a mountain crossing in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region that sits at about 2,471 meters (8,100 feet) elevation. The location offers wide views across high mountain ranges and down toward the Tabatskuri Lake below.

The pass has been a travel route for centuries, connecting regions across Georgia and allowing trade to move between mountain communities. This route shaped how people and goods moved through the Caucasus region.

The villages around the pass reflect Georgian mountain life through how people build their homes and practice traditional crafts passed down over generations. Daily routines and local skills show how communities have adapted to life at high elevation.

A four-wheel-drive vehicle is needed because the road is unpaved with steep sections and loose rocks throughout. It helps to start early and allow plenty of time since the rough terrain makes driving slow and demanding.

The pass marks the entrance to the Ktsia-Tabatskuri Managed Reserve where rare mountain plants and wildlife live in their natural setting. This area is home to species found only in this part of the Caucasus.
