Nakatsu Gorge

Nakatsu Gorge, Mountain canyon in Niyodogawa, Japan

Nakatsu Gorge runs along the Nakatsu River through a valley carved by steep rock walls and large stone formations. The canyon creates deep natural pools with blue-green water nestled between the cliffs.

The rock layers of the gorge formed hundreds of millions of years ago through geological movements of the Earth's crust. The river has continued to reshape this formation over long periods, carving the landscape we see today.

Stone statues of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune stand along the canyon path, reflecting traditional Japanese beliefs about prosperity and blessing. Visitors encounter these figures as they walk, making the route feel like a spiritual journey through the landscape.

A walking trail leads through the canyon to the Uryu Falls at the end of the route. Parking is available nearby, and a hot spring facility offers refreshment after exploring the area.

A traditional rope hangs above the Uryu Falls, marking a symbolic boundary between the divine and human realms according to Japanese belief. Most visitors miss this detail despite its spiritual significance to the site.
