Lac du Petit Maclu, Lake in Le Frasnois, France
Lac du Petit Maclu is a mountain lake in the Jura region spanning about 5 hectares with a length of roughly 500 meters. The water reaches depths of about 11 meters and is ringed by forest edges and grassy slopes.
The lake basin was carved during the last glacial period when ice sheets shaped the Jura landscape and left behind deep hollows. After the glaciers retreated, these natural depressions filled with water to form the lake we see today.
The lake serves as a gathering spot for local anglers and nature enthusiasts who pass down traditional ways of spending time outdoors. The surrounding landscape remains woven into the daily rhythms of those living nearby.
The area connects to a network of marked hiking trails, including a loop linking it to the neighboring lake that suits walkers of all abilities. The path around both lakes offers regular viewpoints and rest spots for visitors.
The lake sits within a protected Natura 2000 zone that harbors rare wetland species including water lilies and specialized aquatic plants. This protected area also supports a variety of bird species and other water creatures rarely seen elsewhere in the region.
