Grandmaster Jean de la Valette
The monument to Jean de la Valette is a stone statue standing in Piazza Jean de Valette behind the Opera House in Valletta, honoring the man who founded the city. The pedestal is shaped like the Maltese Cross, and the figure depicts the Grandmaster in armor holding a sword and city plan in his hands.
Jean de la Valette was born in France in 1494 and joined the Knights Hospitaller, dedicating his life to defending Malta. He was elected Grandmaster in 1557 and organized the successful defense during the Great Siege of 1565 before founding Valletta.
The statue shows Jean de la Valette as the leader whose name is tied to Valletta's founding. The square is used by visitors and residents to take photographs and celebrate the city, especially during festivals when the statue is decorated with banners and displays.
The square is easily reached and located centrally in Valletta near many historic sites such as the Grandmaster's Palace and City Gate. The spot is accessible every day and well-maintained, perfect for a walk or quick stop while exploring the city.
The statue was created by local sculptor Joseph Chetcuti and shows de la Valette in a dynamic forward-stepping pose that reflects his energy and determination. Interestingly, the square itself only opened in 2012, even though people had wanted to honor the founder for a long time.
