Ecomuseo-Fluviarium de la Montaña y Cuencas Fluviales Pasiegas
The Ecomuseo-Fluviarium de la Montaña y Cuencas Fluviales Pasiegas is a museum in Liérganes dedicated to the natural and cultural heritage of the Pasiego valleys. The two-floor building contains exhibits on mountain habitats and river ecosystems, a replica of a traditional Pasiego house, panels explaining historical forest clearing, and aquariums showcasing native river species from mountain streams to lowland areas.
The museum was founded by the Foundation of Nature and People to share the ecological importance of the Pasiego region. Exhibits highlight how deforestation from the 16th to 18th centuries reshaped the mountains and valleys, affecting both the land and the communities that depended on it.
The Pasiego people have a deep connection to the rivers and mountains shown throughout the museum. Local farming and fishing traditions are visible in displays of old tools and techniques, as well as in a replica of a traditional Pasiego house that shows how families lived in this landscape.
The museum is easy to access and offers a quiet environment for exploring nature exhibits. The two-floor layout has clear pathways through displays, and a reception area provides information along with a shop selling local crafts and nature-related books.
The living aquariums recreate a Cantabrian river system in miniature, from mountain streams to the river mouth, featuring native otters and fish. Visitors often witness the feeding of the otters, a memorable moment that especially captivates children.
