House of 4711, Historic perfumery in downtown Cologne, Germany.
The Dufthaus 4711 features neo-Gothic architecture on Glockengasse street, offering guided tours, fragrance seminars, and an interactive fragrance fountain where visitors can experience authentic Eau de Cologne while learning about traditional perfume-making processes and the brand's craftsmanship heritage.
Established in 1792 when Wilhelm Mülhens received the secret recipe from Carthusian monk Franz Maria Farina, this perfume house created the original Eau de Cologne that initially served as a health tonic before evolving into a globally recognized fragrance formula.
The house represents Cologne's cultural heritage in global perfumery, featuring hourly chimes playing melodies like the French national anthem and Napoleonic figurines, embodying the authenticity of genuine Kölnisch Wasser produced exclusively in Cologne according to traditional standards.
Open Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM and Saturday until 6:00 PM, this wheelchair-accessible venue offers public tours, fragrance seminars, and a retail shop selling various perfume collections including Acqua Colonia and limited editions.
Visitors can create their own Eau de Cologne during hands-on seminars and participate in a fragrance menu experience combining culinary arts with olfactory exploration, featuring multi-course tastings of ingredients associated with the original 4711 scent formula.
