Altstadt
Altstadt is the oldest neighborhood in Hannover, located in the Mitte district and covering several blocks of mixed buildings. Narrow streets connect squares with churches, monuments, and low-rise structures, while broader sections feature newer development.
This neighborhood originated in the Middle Ages as Hannover's original settlement core and was shaped by wars, fires, and reconstruction efforts. The street layout today reflects these different building phases and past reconstructions.
The name Altstadt refers to the historical core where the city began. Today residents and visitors experience the neighborhood as a place where timber-framed houses stand alongside modern buildings, with small shops and cafés shaping daily life.
The neighborhood is easy to explore on foot, with good walkways between squares and streets. Parking is limited, so public transport and bicycles are practical alternatives.
Many buildings here were rebuilt after destruction, with some old structures carefully reconstructed to match their original appearance. This blend shows how the neighborhood preserves its past while adapting to modern times.
