Statue du Général Delzons, Memorial in Aurillac, France
The Statue du Général Delzons is a stone memorial in Aurillac, a town in the Cantal department of south-central France. It shows the general standing in military uniform on a raised base, set within a small paved square in the town center.
General Alexis Joseph Delzons was born in Aurillac in 1775 and served under Napoleon in several campaigns, including the Russian campaign of 1812, during which he was killed. The memorial was later erected in his hometown to mark his service and his ties to the region.
The statue stands in a small square in the center of Aurillac, where people walk by every day. On certain commemorative occasions, flowers or small flags are placed at its base, reflecting the town's connection to its own past.
The memorial is easy to reach on foot from anywhere in central Aurillac and can be visited at any time of day. Nearby benches offer a place to sit, and the square provides some shade depending on the time of day.
Delzons was killed at the Battle of Maloyaroslavets in October 1812, one of the less remembered engagements of the Russian campaign. He was struck by a cannonball shortly after having gone to help his wounded brother on the battlefield.
