Garden of Eternal Rest
The Garden of Eternal Rest is a section of Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens in Laurel, a cemetery with well-kept lawns, simple gravestones, and trees. Paths guide visitors through the grounds and offer quiet spots for pausing and reflecting.
The site was founded in the early 20th century and originally called Maxwellton Park, with a racetrack and a small lake. Later, a doctor bought the land and added gardens, statues, and a lake with a bridge to create a quiet place for remembrance.
Visitors walk quietly among the graves and take time to recall memories of their family members. The name of the garden refers to the wish for peace and a dignified place of rest for those who have passed.
The grounds are open from sunrise to sunset, allowing visitors to come at different times of day. The paths are easy to walk on and suitable for quiet strolls.
A tall granite stone honors the founder of Laurel Hill and stands at the highest point of the site with a view of Pennsylvania Avenue. Nearby, a grotto depicts the Easter story with statues of Roman soldiers and an angel.
