Lübecker Weihnachtsmarkt
The Christmas market in Lübeck spreads across eleven different markets scattered throughout the old town, each with its own character and location. Stalls sell handmade goods, gingerbread, mulled wine, and warm drinks while strings of lights and decorated evergreens ornament the entire area.
The market was first mentioned in 1648 at the town hall, making it one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets. Over centuries, it evolved from a simple trading place into an essential part of Lübeck's pre-Christmas tradition.
Local artisans display their handcrafted work at various stalls, creating direct connections between makers and visitors who appreciate skilled craftsmanship. This interaction reflects how the community values tradition and personal connection during the winter season.
The various markets are spread throughout the old town and can be visited on foot. On Saturdays during Advent, free shuttle buses provide convenient access, allowing visitors to park easily and explore the markets comfortably.
The Fairy Tale Forest near St. Mary's Church tells stories of the Brothers Grimm through lovingly designed little houses, enchanting children with colorful scenes of Snow White and Rapunzel. This magical world offers an experience that goes beyond typical market stalls.
