Ferrata Marcirosa

Ferrata Marcirosa is a protected climbing route in Castelmezzano that follows the slope near Pietrapertosa for about 1.778 meters (5,835 ft). The path features steep rock faces, fixed metal ladders, two suspension bridges, and permanent anchor points that guide climbers safely across exposed cliff sections and narrow passages.

The climbing route has been used for generations as a way to navigate this cliff-face, and was later equipped with permanent safety gear to allow safe public access. A Roman bridge at the route's starting point marks a centuries-old pathway that connected communities across this mountainous terrain.

The route reflects the local mountain culture where climbing and outdoor exploration are central to how residents connect with their environment. Visitors walking this path experience firsthand how the community values adventurous engagement with the natural surroundings and the landscape.

Start from the village of Pietrapertosa, where parking is available near the Church of San Cataldo, and follow the Strada delle 7 Pietre trail to reach the Roman bridge where the actual route begins. Wear sturdy hiking boots and bring a hat, as most of the route is exposed to sun and wind; the entire outing takes about two and a half hours to complete.

The route ends near the launch point for Volo dell'Angelo, a cable ride that lets adventurers zip-line back down the mountain in a thrilling descent. This allows visitors to experience the same mountain landscape from two completely different perspectives during a single outing.
