Castelmezzano, Mountain commune in Basilicata, Italy
Castelmezzano is a mountain commune in the province of Potenza, situated at 750 meters elevation among steep limestone cliffs of the Lucanian Dolomites. The settlement consists of tightly clustered stone houses with narrow streets that wind between the buildings and along the cliff edges.
The settlement originated from the ancient community of Maudoro between the 6th and 5th centuries BC, later transformed under Norman rule into Castrum Medianum in the 11th century. This medieval shift shaped the village's structure and importance for centuries to come.
The Mother Church of Santa Maria dell'Olmo stands at the heart of the settlement and shows baroque influences in its design and decoration. Residents have maintained these religious spaces for centuries, using them for worship and local celebrations that still happen today.
Local roads link the village to the neighboring Pietrapertosa, making it easy for visitors to explore the wider region. Accommodation options range from guesthouses to small hotels scattered throughout the area for those planning to stay overnight.
A distinctive feature is the Seven Stones Path, which blends natural trails with art installations and audio guides. This unusual combination of nature and contemporary artistic design allows visitors to discover local stories in an interactive way.
