Piazza del Comune
Piazza del Comune is the main public square in Fabriano, surrounded by buildings from medieval to baroque times. The triangular plaza features the Sturinalto Fountain at its center, the Palazzo del Podestà from 1255 with its distinctive pointed arches and battlements, the Palazzo Comunale built in the 14th and 15th centuries that houses the Teatro Gentile inside its courtyard, the Palazzo Vescovile from 1545 with a tower beside it, and a covered 17th-century arcade with 19 arches adjoining the Church of San Francesco.
This square has served as Fabriano's civic center since the city's founding and was once called Platea Magna. The Palazzo del Podestà was erected in 1255 at a key location over an underground stream to symbolize political authority, while the Sturinalto Fountain was built between 1285 and 1351 as a sign of popular power and inspired by similar fountains in Perugia.
The square is a pedestrian zone free from car traffic, allowing you to walk freely and take your time observing the buildings and architectural details. The level ground and network of walking paths make it easy to navigate and comfortable for visitors of all ages.
The Palazzo del Podestà was built over an underground stream, with the building serving as a bridge, which explains its position above a hidden waterway. This blend of architecture and natural water flow reveals how the city's development was interwoven with the landscape.
