Palazzo del Podestà

Palazzo del Podestà is a Gothic palace in Fabriano's main civic square constructed from white local stone with three distinct building sections. The central vaulted arch forms a prominent architectural feature that defines the square's character.

The palace was built in 1255 at the location where two separate medieval districts converged to form the unified town center. This construction period coincided with Fabriano's growth as a seat of local governance and administrative power.

The palace displays fresco fragments created by Ventura di Francesco in the 1300s showing battle scenes and symbolic imagery. These wall paintings reveal how civic power centers were artistically decorated during the medieval period.

The building is centrally located on the main square and remains accessible to visitors year-round. The best views of the architecture can be appreciated from different points around the plaza.

A tributary stream once flowed beneath the main arch providing water to the town and revealing medieval engineering ingenuity. This hidden water system was essential for supporting the town's daily functions and growth.
