The current building replaced an earlier Benedictine structure from 1006, with extensive renovations undertaken in the 18th and 19th centuries by architect Virginio Vespignani. These renovations significantly transformed the structure from its medieval origins.
Artist Ulisse Ribustini created numerous pictorial decorations throughout the interior of San Benedetto, completing this extensive work in 1924.
