Llastres

Lastres is a village on Asturian coast built into steep cliffs, with white houses featuring red roofs clustered closely together and seemingly suspended above the water. Narrow cobblestone streets wind through multiple levels of the settlement, passing flower-covered balconies and weathered stone buildings, while an active port with around 50 boats serves as the economic center.

Lastres began as a fishing port where whale hunting once played a major role, while also serving as a coastal defense post with a fortress called El Castillo to guard against invasions. Major structures built in the 18th century, including the Clock Tower of 1751 and the Church of Santa María de Sábada, mark the period when the village took its present form.

Lastres takes its name from its location on steep cliffs above the water. The community maintains a strong connection to the sea that shapes daily life - fishermen work the port while restaurants serve the day's catch, making seafood central to local tradition and identity.

The village is accessible by road with good public transport connections from other parts of Asturias, making it easy to visit at a leisurely pace. Walking is ideal for exploring the steep, narrow streets and discovering viewpoints, while nearby beaches, the Jurassic Museum, and Covadonga cave are convenient for short excursions.

The village has become one of the most photographed places in Asturias and served as the filming location for the popular television series Doctor Mateo. The local geology is equally remarkable - cliff faces reveal Jurassic layers containing dinosaur footprints that testify to the prehistoric past.
