Naturpark Dobratsch
Naturpark Dobratsch is a large protected area near Villach with mountains, valleys and forests open to visitors year-round. The Villacher Alpenstraße road climbs from the town to 1732 meters (5682 feet), connecting viewpoints, mountain huts, and an alpine garden with rare plants.
People have worked with metals and minerals in this area for about 3500 years. The mountain itself is ancient, shaped by ice and weather over millions of years.
The park reflects how people have worked with the land over centuries. Visitors can learn about historical mining and craftsmanship through displays that show tools and methods used in earlier times.
Sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are important, especially since it gets colder at higher elevations. Parking is available at several points along the road, and mountain huts offer food and drinks at main locations.
A viewing platform extends about 400 meters (1300 feet) over a steep cliff, offering an unusual perspective over the landscape below. In late summer, thousands of migrating birds rest here, especially birds of prey, creating rare observation opportunities.
