Jean Marais
Espace Jean Marais is a museum in Vallauris that displays the diverse artistic work of an artist who worked as an actor, painter, sculptor, and ceramic artist. The space occupies his former gallery building and presents works across different artistic media.
The artist first came to Vallauris in the 1950s, visited frequently, and settled there permanently in 1980 after opening his first gallery in 1975. Vallauris recognized his contributions and named him Citizen of Honor in 1998.
The space honors an artist who settled in Vallauris and embraced the local pottery tradition. His presence in the town connected cinema and visual art in a way that shaped the creative community.
Admission is free year-round, with opening hours that vary by season and longer hours in the summer months of July to September. The venue welcomes groups and offers guided tours and workshops for different age groups.
A bronze sculpture called La Rebellissière stands in front of the museum, depicting a pottery assistant - a gift from the artist to the town in 1991. His grave in the old cemetery is adorned with sculptures, showing his lasting connection to the place.
