Chhari Dhand Bird Sanctuary
Chhari Dhand Bird Sanctuary is a nature reserve in Gujarat, India, consisting of shallow water bodies and wetlands. The landscape features grasslands and salt flats with reflecting water surfaces, creating colorful scenes especially at sunrise and sunset.
The sanctuary was recently recognized as a Ramsar site, gaining international protection due to its ecological importance. This designation resulted from efforts by local and national authorities to preserve natural habitats for birds and wildlife.
The name Chhari Dhand comes from the local language, meaning "salty shallow wetlands". Local communities remain deeply involved in protecting this place, viewing the wetlands as a vital part of their natural heritage.
The best time to visit is between November and February when most migratory birds arrive and weather is cooler. Plan to come early morning or late afternoon, bring binoculars, and carry your own water and snacks since facilities inside the reserve are limited.
The sanctuary serves as a vital stopover for migratory birds traveling from distant places on long journeys. Thousands of flamingos and cranes gather here to rest and feed before continuing their migrations.
