Estrela Jewish Cemetery, Jewish cemetery in the Estrela neighborhood, Lisbon, Portugal
The Cimetière Juif de l'Estrela, also known as the Jewish Cemetery of Estrela, is a Jewish burial ground located on Rua Afonso III in the Estrela neighborhood of Lisbon, Portugal. The graves are low, set close together, and made from plain stone, giving the site a spare and mineral look with little vegetation.
The Jewish community in Lisbon endured periods of persecution, particularly during the Inquisition in the 16th century, when many families were forced to leave the city. The cemetery was established in the early 19th century, with José Amzalag recorded as the first person buried there.
The gravestones at the Jewish Cemetery of Estrela carry Hebrew inscriptions and simple symbols that reflect Jewish funeral traditions still observed today. Families come here to honor their ancestors, keeping alive the memory of a community that has been rooted in Lisbon for centuries.
The cemetery is a quiet space where visitors are expected to behave respectfully and keep noise to a minimum. Walking slowly through the rows gives you the best chance to read the inscriptions and take in the overall layout of the site.
Some of the graves belong to Jewish refugees who fled to Lisbon from other parts of Europe during the 20th century to escape Nazi persecution. This makes the cemetery a place where the history of Lisbon as a refuge during wartime becomes directly visible.
