South Fountain, Fountain in Santa Maria Maior, Lisbon, Portugal
Fontaine Sud is a small fountain in the Santa Maria Maior neighborhood of Lisbon, Portugal. It sits along one of the area's cobblestone streets and features a simple stone basin with a continuous flow of water.
Lisbon expanded its network of public fountains after the 1755 earthquake, when the city was rebuilt and water supply became a central concern. Many of these fountains were connected to the Aqueduto das Águas Livres, which brought fresh water into different parts of the city.
The fountain is easy to reach on foot and sits in the middle of the historic center, making it a natural stop on a walk through Santa Maria Maior. It is in an open outdoor space and can be visited at any time of day.
In Lisbon, some historic fountains were deliberately built with two levels: one spout for people to drink from and a lower basin for animals. This small detail reflects how the city once managed its water supply to serve everyone living in the neighborhood.
