North fountain of Rossio, Fountain on Rossio square in Lisbon, Portugal
The Fontaine nord de Rossio is a stone fountain on the north side of Rossio square, in central Lisbon. It sits on a raised base with a circular basin and modest decorative details, with water flowing steadily from the spouts.
The fountain was built in the 19th century, when Rossio square took on its current layout and became a central point of public life in Lisbon. At that time, fountains like this one also served as a practical source of water for the population before modern plumbing was introduced.
Rossio square has long been a natural meeting point for Lisbon residents, and the north fountain plays a quiet role in that daily rhythm. People often pause near the water on their way through the square, especially in warmer months when the outdoor cafes nearby fill up.
The fountain is easy to spot on the north end of Rossio square, close to the Rossio train station. The whole area is walkable and open at any time of day, making it a natural stop when exploring the center of Lisbon on foot.
Rossio square has two matching fountains, one on the north side and one on the south, designed as a pair to frame the space symmetrically. Most visitors notice only one of them without realizing they were planned together as part of the square's original layout.
