Garden of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Public garden in Lisbon, Portugal

The Garden of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is a public garden in northern Lisbon, laid out in the 1960s on the grounds of a former country estate. It consists of densely planted areas, open lawns, a central lake, and a pond, all connected by winding paths.

The land belonged in the 19th century to a noble family who turned it into a large park with a pond and pavilion, before it briefly housed the Lisbon Zoo. The Gulbenkian Foundation purchased the property in 1957 and commissioned landscape architects António Viana Barreto and Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles to reshape the garden into its current form.

The garden takes its name from Calouste Gulbenkian, an Armenian-British patron who left his collection and fortune to Portugal. Today, locals use it as a meeting point for walking, reading, or simply sitting under old trees.

The garden sits next to the Gulbenkian Foundation buildings, making it easy to combine a visit to the museum or cultural center with a walk through the grounds. Access is step-free and the paths are wide enough for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Some of the trees in the garden, including old plane trees and eucalyptus, date from the 19th-century estate and were already standing when the foundation took over the site. They give the garden a sense of depth that newer plantings cannot replace.
