Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, Contemporary art museum in Avenidas Novas district, Lisbon, Portugal
Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian is a museum in the Avenidas Novas district that houses around 10000 works of modern and contemporary Portuguese art alongside international pieces within a renovated building. The facility features both interior galleries and outdoor garden spaces for exhibitions.
British architect Leslie Martin designed the original museum building in the 1980s, while Japanese architect Kengo Kuma fundamentally reimagined the structure during a comprehensive transformation. The renovation concluded in 2023 and significantly altered the building's appearance.
The museum presents works by Portuguese artists and international creators through rotating exhibitions that span drawings, installations, and multimedia presentations. These collections invite visitors to discover various artistic expressions arranged throughout dedicated spaces.
Visitors can reach the museum through a new entrance on Rua Marques da Fronteira and explore both interior spaces and outdoor garden areas. The site is easily accessible with clear pathways connecting the different zones.
The museum's roof is crafted with about 100 meters of ash planks and white Portuguese ceramic tiles, creating a transitional space between the building and garden. This handcrafted approach using natural materials is unusual for a modern art museum.
