Spanish Pavilion, National art museum in Venice, Italy
The Spanish Pavilion is a national exhibition space located in the Giardini di Castello in Venice, used during the Venice Biennale. The interior is organized into several distinct rooms, each focused on a different theme and filled with paintings, installations, and text-based works.
The Spanish Pavilion was built as part of the national pavilions in the Giardini di Castello, which were gradually established from the late 19th century onward. It has since served as a regular venue for presenting Spanish art on an international stage.
The Spanish Pavilion is one of the few national pavilions at the Biennale that regularly presents artists not born in the country it represents. This makes it a space where questions about national identity and belonging become visible through art.
The pavilion is located in the Giardini di Castello and can be reached on foot from several vaporetto stops. Visiting on weekdays tends to be more comfortable, as weekends and opening days can draw large crowds.
For the 2024 edition, a Peruvian artist named Sandra Gamarra Heshiki represented Spain, the first time in 60 years that someone not born in Spain was chosen. Her project, called Pinacoteca Migrante, is built entirely from her own painted copies of works drawn from historic Spanish collections.
