Garden of the Bergeyre Hill, Community garden in the 19th arrondissement, Paris, France
The Jardin de la Butte Bergeyre is a shared garden on the Butte Bergeyre hill in the 19th arrondissement of Paris. It sits behind the houses on Rue Georges-Lardennois and contains small cultivation plots, aromatic plants, fruit trees, and a small vineyard.
The garden opened in September 2004 during the Fête des jardins and was previously known as the Jardin des Chaufourniers, a name that refers to the gypsum kilns that once operated in this area. The small vineyard, known as the Clos des Chaufourniers, was planted in 1995 and produced its first harvest in 2010.
The Jardin de la Butte Bergeyre is a community garden managed by local residents who take turns tending the small plots and welcoming visitors. The city of Paris has awarded it the Main Verte label, which recognizes gardens that follow ecological practices.
The garden is within walking distance of the Bolivar metro station (line 7bis); the walk up through the cobbled lanes of the Butte Bergeyre is short but steep. It is only open on certain days of the week, so it is worth checking before you go.
The garden keeps several beehives that produced around 170 kilograms of honey in 2018, and the vineyard grows varieties including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Muscat, with grapes pressed each year in the Bercy district. Although the vineyard is not open to the public, the annual harvest brings together the garden's volunteers every autumn.
