Schron mobilizacyjny U4 IIa, Single-person bunker in Chartowo, Poznań, Poland
Schron U4 IIa is a small underground concrete bunker in the Chartowo district of Poznań, built as a single-person shelter. It consists of a narrow entrance leading into a low-ceilinged room with thick concrete walls and a cool, damp interior.
The bunker was built during a period when Poznań was setting up a network of underground shelters in preparation for possible air raids. It was never used in combat but survived as a physical trace of that period of preparation.
The name U4 IIa refers to a classification system once used for a whole network of similar shelters across Poznań. Visitors today can see how plain and functional these spaces were, built with no thought for comfort.
The bunker is accessible on foot and sits in a quiet, partly wooded part of Chartowo. A daytime visit is recommended since there is no artificial lighting inside and the ground can be uneven.
Although designed for a single person, this shelter was once part of a much larger network of similar structures, most of which are no longer visible today. This one is among the few that remain accessible and recognizable.
