Café Murillo is a restaurant and café in the Retiro neighborhood of Madrid, located right next to the Prado Museum at the Murillo gate. It has both an indoor dining area and an outdoor terrace, and serves a menu that mixes Spanish staples with some international dishes.
A café has occupied this spot since 1927, making it one of the older coffee spots in the area. In 2019, the space was taken over and relaunched by Eliza Arcaya under the current name.
The café takes its name from the Murillo gate of the Prado Museum, right next to which it stands. Its terrace facing the museum is a natural meeting point for people who want to sit outside after visiting the galleries.
The café sits right between the Botanical Garden and the Prado, so it works well as a stop before or after a museum visit. The terrace fills up quickly on nice days, so arriving a little early is a good idea if you want a seat outside.
Guillermo Teixeira started as the café's first employee and eventually became a co-owner, which is an unusual path for a small neighborhood spot. The menu also features Venezuelan dishes like tequeños, something many visitors do not expect to find next to the Prado.
