Akihabara Electric Town, Electronics and shopping district in Chiyoda City, Tokyo, Japan

Akihabara Electric Town, also known as Akiba, is a shopping and entertainment district in Chiyoda City, Tokyo, built around electronics stores and shops selling manga, anime goods, and collectibles. The streets are lined with large multi-floor stores alongside narrow alleys packed with smaller specialty shops and arcade centers.

Before World War II, the area was a market for fresh produce. After the war, traders began selling surplus industrial parts, and the district gradually became a center for consumer electronics, eventually expanding into anime and gaming culture.

On Sunday afternoons, the main street closes to cars and fills with people walking freely between the shops. Maid cafes, where staff dress in costume and perform for guests, are among the most visible signs of the neighborhood's pop culture scene.

The easiest way to enter the district is through the Electric Town Exit of Akihabara Station, which leads directly onto the main shopping street. Shops generally open in the morning and many stay open into the late evening, so there is flexibility in planning a visit.

Although the area is now known for anime and electronics, it was once a fresh produce market supplied by boats along nearby waterways. A small fruit shop called Freuf de Saison, not far from the station, still carries a trace of that past by serving seasonal fruit parfaits and fresh juices.
