Seoul City Wall Trail, Hiking trail in Seoul, South Korea

The Seoul City Wall Trail is a hiking trail in Seoul, South Korea, that follows the ancient stone wall known as Hanyangdoseong for about 18.6 kilometers (11.5 miles). The route passes over four mountains, through city parks and residential neighborhoods, and connects surviving wall sections with historic gates.

The wall was built in 1396, during the Joseon dynasty, to mark and protect the new capital city. Over the following centuries it was repaired several times, then partially demolished, and large-scale restoration work began in the late 20th century.

Along the route, narrow old alleys alternate with open park areas, giving the walk a rhythm that shifts between city life and quiet green spaces. In autumn, ginkgo trees turn yellow and drop their leaves along the old stones, making that season especially worth the walk.

The trail can be walked year-round, but rocky sections become slippery in heavy rain, so checking conditions before you go is wise. Those planning to walk the full length should start early and carry enough water and snacks, since supply points along the way are spread out.

Near Baegaksan, some sections pass close to a military zone, and photography is not allowed there, which is still enforced today. The stones of the wall also tell their own story: smaller and more irregular blocks are the oldest, while larger and smoother ones mark later repairs.
