Seoul City Wall Museum, History museum in Jongno District, Seoul, South Korea
The Seoul City Wall Museum opened on 31 July 2014 in the Jongno-5.6 ga Subdistrict of Jongno District, Seoul. It occupies the design support centre building inside Dongdaemun City Wall Park and is a branch of the Seoul Museum of History. Its three floors hold a permanent exhibition hall on the third, an information centre and study room on the second, and a temporary exhibition hall on the first.
The wall was built during the Joseon Dynasty to protect Seoul from invasions. Over the centuries, portions were repaired or removed as the city expanded, but some sections remain preserved today.
The names of the city gates reflected their historical importance and positions around old Seoul. Walking through the exhibits, you notice how the presence of these walls shaped daily life for residents.
The museum is near public transportation and accessible by a short walk from nearby stations. The location is straightforward to navigate and can easily be combined with visits to other historic sites in the area.
