Songnisan National Park, National park in North Chungcheong Province, South Korea

Songnisan National Park is a protected natural area in the mountains of North Chungcheong Province, near the town of Boeun. It covers forested peaks, rocky ridges, and river valleys connected by a wide network of hiking trails.

The Songnisan mountains have been a place of Buddhist retreat since at least the Silla period, over a thousand years ago. The area was officially designated a national park in 1970, which brought formal protection to both its forests and its historic sites.

The park is closely tied to Beopjusa Temple, one of the most visited Buddhist sites in Korea. Visitors can observe monks going about their daily routines and watch worshippers leave offerings at the temple's many shrines.

Some trails in the park can be temporarily closed during dry seasons or periods of high fire risk, so it is worth checking conditions before setting out. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as many paths involve steep sections and uneven terrain.

A pine tree inside the park, known as the Jeongipum Pine, is said to have been granted a royal court rank by a Joseon-era king, making it one of the few trees in Korea to hold an official title. The story goes that the tree lowered its branches to let the king's palanquin pass, and the king rewarded it on the spot.
