Seomun Market, Market and shopping district in Daegu, South Korea

Seomun Market is a large market and shopping district in the Jung-gu district of central Daegu, South Korea. It is made up of several indoor buildings and outdoor stalls selling textiles, clothing, household goods, and food.

Seomun Market was established in the late 1400s during the Joseon dynasty, and was once counted among the three main markets in all of Korea. Its name means "market at the west gate," referring to its original position near the western entrance of the old city fortress.

The market is especially known for its flat dumplings called napjak mandu, a local specialty visitors often seek out. In the evening, the alleys fill with food stalls and people eating while walking, giving the place a rhythm that feels very much part of daily life in Daegu.

The market is easiest to reach by taking the Daegu Metro Line 3 to Seomun Market Station, which puts you right at the entrance. Spending a couple of hours lets you walk through both the textile buildings and the food stalls, though evenings are when the food side of the market comes most alive.

The market is also associated with jjokgalbi, small beef short ribs grilled on charcoal burners, which is considered one of Daegu's most loved dishes. Tailors working inside the market can make custom clothing relatively quickly, which surprises many visitors who come only expecting a food market.
