Sarıkamış-Allahuekber Mountains National Park, National park in Erzurum and Kars provinces, Turkey
Sarıkamış-Allahuekber Mountains National Park is a national park in northeastern Turkey, spanning parts of Erzurum and Kars provinces. The terrain combines high, often snow-covered ridges with pine forests at upper elevations and birch and juniper trees lower down.
The area became known through the Battle of Sarıkamış in the winter of 1914 to 1915, when Ottoman forces suffered heavy losses in the mountain snow. Later in the 20th century, the land was protected and eventually declared a national park.
Several memorials stand along the mountain paths, marking the sites where soldiers died during World War I. Visitors walk between the monuments and the forest trails, often pausing in silence.
The park is accessible via four routes from nearby towns, and the drive in already offers open views of the mountains. Winter visits require warm clothing, as temperatures drop sharply at higher elevations.
The park is listed as an Important Bird Area, with over 107 bird species recorded, drawing watchers from far away. Tracks left in the snow by lynxes and brown bears are a common sight along quieter trails in winter.
