Boğatepe Cheese Museum
Boğatepe Cheese Museum is a food museum located in a village in Kars Province that showcases traditional cheese-making methods and displays old tools used in the craft. The building offers visitors a view of how local milk is transformed into cheese and reveals the simple techniques passed down through generations.
The area has long been shaped by pastoralism and milk-based food production, gradually becoming the village's economic foundation and identity. Local families developed techniques to make cheese from available milk and continued these practices even after the village's leadership changed.
The village centers its identity around cheese-making, a craft that has become woven into daily routines and family traditions over many generations. Today, visitors can observe how locals continue these practices and pass them to younger people.
The museum is located about an hour away from the city of Kars in a quiet village with stone houses and narrow streets. Wear comfortable shoes for walking on uneven ground and allow time to chat with locals and explore the peaceful surroundings at a slow pace.
The museum was founded in 2005 as Turkey's first cheese museum and remains the only one of its kind in the country. Visitors also have the chance to taste several regional cheese varieties and experience the different flavors that result from local production methods.
