Eghegnamor monastery

Eghegnamor monastery is a medieval ruin in Kağızman built from stone with the architectural characteristics of a religious structure from that era. The remains still display the layout of a church with vestiges of substantial proportions and crafted details from its original construction.

The monastery was established around 1001 and came under the control of powerful regional families. Its ownership shifted as political power changed hands across Armenia and the surrounding territories.

The structure carries a name rooted in Armenian, referring to the local landscape, while the Turkish village name reflects a historical architectural feature. This linguistic layering reveals how the place has been shaped by different communities over time.

The site is accessible from Kağızman town and situated in Çengilli village where visitors can explore the ruins. The approach is straightforward, though the ground is uneven in places and parts of the structure offer limited protection from weather.

The structure now serves a completely different purpose than it did as a religious center and has been repurposed by the local community for practical needs. This transformation shows how ancient structures adapt to new demands and continue to serve the people living nearby.
