Distillery District, Historic distillery district in Toronto, Canada

The Distillery District is a pedestrian-only historic quarter in Toronto, filled with red-brick Victorian industrial buildings from a former spirits complex. Narrow cobblestone lanes connect former warehouses, now occupied by shops, galleries, restaurants, and open-air patios under tall chimneys and iron beams.

The site grew in the 19th century as the Gooderham & Worts distillery, which became one of the largest spirits producers in the country before closing in the late 20th century. The complex later reopened as a preserved heritage area, with recognition as a national historic site.

During the winter holiday season, the main square and surrounding lanes become an open-air village with wooden stalls, strings of lights, and a tall decorated tree. Visitors browse handmade crafts, sample roasted chestnuts, and hear live music echoing off the brick walls.

The district is easiest to explore on foot, since cars are mostly kept out and the lanes are wide and even. Early afternoon tends to be quieter, while late afternoon and evening bring more people to the outdoor seating areas.

The old industrial backdrop has appeared in hundreds of films and television productions since the 1990s, because the brick lanes and loading docks can pass for cities from other eras. Visitors may come across temporary barriers and light stands between the shops without notice.
