The town lies at the confluence of the Ploučnice and Svitavka rivers, surrounded by the Ralsko Uplands at an elevation of 258 meters.
Established between 1310 and 1319 near Lipý Castle, the settlement received its first official town charter in 1381 from the Veitmile family.
