Ss. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in New Town, Prague, Czech Republic.
Ss. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral is a brick building in New Town that rises over three aisles. The exterior shows baroque forms, while inside you find stucco decoration and ceiling paintings stretching across the vaults.
Kilián Ignaz Dientzenhofer led construction between 1730 and 1736 for the Brothers Hospitallers order. The Orthodox Church took over the building in 1935 and gave it its current name.
The name honors two Byzantine missionaries from the ninth century who shaped Slavic liturgical traditions. The congregation follows Orthodox rites today and maintains connections with eastern Christian communities in the city.
The entrance sits on a busy street in New Town, a few walking minutes from Charles Square. The crypt downstairs is accessible as a memorial site and offers a contrast to the brighter church space.
In June 1942, seven resistance fighters retreated to the crypt after the assassination attempt on Reinhard Heydrich. After a siege lasting several hours, German units closed in on them there.
