The settlement was first documented in writing in 1318, after nobles had begun castle construction 15 years earlier. These early structures formed the foundation for later development into an administrative center.
The Church of Saint Giles with its pointed arch windows and stone walls has shaped the townscape since the early 1500s. It continues to draw visitors who come to admire the craftsmanship of the late Gothic style.
