Staré Město lies in the agricultural landscape of Lower Morava Valley, extending into Kyjov Hills with approximately 6,600 residents at 205 meters elevation.
The area formed part of Velingrad, a capital of Great Moravian Empire, with first written records dating to 1141 and Cistercian monks establishing Velehrad monastery in 1205.
The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel contains remnants of a Great Moravian rotunda, representing the architectural heritage from the 13th century.
