Silesian Ostrava Castle, Medieval castle in Slezská Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Silesian Ostrava Castle is a castle in the Slezská Ostrava district of Ostrava, sitting on a low hill at the point where the Ostravice and Lučina rivers meet. Built in a Gothic style and later modified with Renaissance elements, it has thick stone walls, towers, and a series of interior rooms open to visitors.
The castle was built in the late 13th century by a prince of the Piast dynasty to guard a border region between Silesia and Moravia. It changed hands many times over the following centuries and was gradually transformed from a military post into a noble residence.
The castle hosts rotating exhibitions in its cellars that showcase local crafts and trade practices from the Middle Ages. These displays reveal how the stronghold functioned as a center for commerce and artisan work throughout centuries.
The castle sits on a low rise and can be reached on foot from central Ostrava in a short walk. Wear sturdy shoes, as the path to the entrance and the interior floors include uneven stone surfaces and stairs.
Coal was mined directly beneath the castle throughout much of the 20th century, gradually weakening its foundations and causing visible cracks in the walls. A major restoration project completed in the early 2000s stabilized the structure and reopened it to the public.
