Kněhyňská jeskyně, Natural monument and protected cave in Čeladná, Czech Republic.
Kněhyňská jeskyně is a cave system in the Godula sandstone rock formation measuring 280 meters in length and reaching about 57.5 meters deep. It features a network of branching fissures and chambers created by natural erosion processes over time.
The cave received protected status in 1990 when local authorities designated it to preserve its geological formations. This designation recognized the site's importance for scientific study and environmental conservation.
Scientists regularly conduct research on bat populations in the cave, documenting the presence of eight different species including Myotis myotis.
The cave is located between 1045 and 1050 meters above sea level in a forested area. Access requires a walk of about 250 meters through forest from the nearest road.
The cave system developed through gravitational processes in the Godula sandstone, creating what geologists call pseudokarst passages. This type of formation differs from typical limestone caves and reveals unusual geological conditions specific to this rock type.
