Štvanice Footbridge, Pedestrian footbridge between Holešovice and Karlín, Czech Republic
The Štvanice footbridge connects Holešovice and Karlín across the Vltava River, passing through Štvanice Island over a span of about 300 meters. It is roughly 5 meters wide and rises approximately 13 meters above the water, with its slender white concrete structure creating a modern appearance.
The bridge was constructed between early 2022 and mid-2023 as a solution to improve connections between the two districts. Its opening in July 2023 marked a new step in the city's infrastructure development.
The bronze handrails display animal head sculptures representing each area: rabbits for Štvanice Island, bulls for Holešovice, and horses for Karlín. These carved details tell stories about what makes each neighborhood distinct and special.
The bridge welcomes pedestrians and cyclists, with integrated LED lighting along the handrails for visibility after dark. Emergency vehicles can also use it, and the smooth concrete surface remains walkable in various weather conditions.
The structure uses high-performance fiber concrete developed at Czech Technical University, giving it a white marble-like appearance. This specialized material requires minimal upkeep throughout its lifespan.
