Rudolfova štola, Underground water tunnel in Holešovice, Czech Republic
Rudolfova štola is an underground water tunnel beneath Prague spanning about 1,100 meters with a width of less than 1 meter. The passage stands 2 to 3 meters high and connects two locations through the rock beneath the city.
A 16th-century ruler ordered this tunnel to be dug between 1581 and 1593 to bring water to a garden. Miners who had previously worked in silver mines carried out the demanding work.
The tunnel is named after the ruler who commissioned it, revealing how water was managed in the city centuries ago. Visitors can see how practical engineering solved everyday needs in that era.
The entrance is located at Kpt. Jaroše street while the exit opens to Stromovka Park, making a clear walking route through the city. The entire passage has lighting, so you can walk safely despite the tight spaces and darkness.
The project required five deep shafts about 33 to 39 meters down just to dig the tunnel from above. These shafts were the only way to handle the heavy work at such depth beneath the city.
