Fort Science, Interactive science museum in former artillery warehouse, Olomouc, Czech Republic

Fort Science is a science centre in the Crown Fortress complex in Olomouc, opened on 17 April 2015 as the visitor centre of Palacký University. Its plain mid-19th-century artillery store has a timber frame, two-storey perimeter walls and two attic levels under a pitched roof; the original ramps between floors survive. Four exhibitions hold about 200 interactive exhibits.

The building began as an artillery store of the Crown Fortress, built in the mid-19th century; the Slovak Wikipedia dates the former store to 1897. The city took over the decaying site in the 1990s and gave it to Palacký University, which rebuilt it over three years for about 150 million CZK. It opened on 17 April 2015 during the AFO festival.

The museum is run by Palacký University's Faculty of Science, and most staff are specialists from the faculty; its animators are mainly students who help create exhibits and programmes. The ground-floor Do historie! exhibit covers Olomouc and the Crown Fortress, with a large cannon model and a model of the Terezská brána gate.

The museum is easy to navigate and has clear sections for different age groups if you are visiting with children. It helps to allow time for working through the stations, as many visitors like to conduct experiments themselves.

You can walk through an oversized model of the human brain and experience scientific functions up close. You can also experiment with flood simulations and explore enlarged insect models in detail.
