Saint Francis of Assisi, Religious statue on Charles Bridge, Czech Republic
Saint Francis of Assisi is a stone statue on Charles Bridge depicting the saint in religious robes bearing stigmata marks. Two neoclassical angels stand beside the figure on a pseudo-baroque pedestal.
Emanuel Max sculpted this piece in 1855 to replace an earlier 1708 version by František Preis that had deteriorated significantly. The replacement was part of the bridge's broader renovation efforts during the 19th century.
The statue represents Saint Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan Order, known for his dedication to nature, animals, and environmental stewardship.
This statue stands on the south side of Charles Bridge among numerous stone sculptures lining the pedestrian walkway. You can easily spot it while walking between Old Town and Lesser Quarter.
Count František Antonín Kolowrat Liebsteinský commissioned this piece as part of the bridge's collection of religious and historical monuments.
